What kind of clothes are harder to make quilts out of?

While any fabric can be made into a quilt if you’re willing to be flexible, some garments are just tougher than others. Here’s a few based on my experience:

  • shirts with lots of panels and darts

  • jersey knits/t-shirts: these you have to stabilize if you’d like to make them into a quilt

  • sheer fabrics: they’re often too weak to hold up over time

  • slinky fabrics: any fabrics with give and stretch are going to be tricky

  • inexpensive wovens: I’ve had fabrics rip in half as I was trying to deconstruct the garment

  • sequined fabrics: the plastic bits can be tricky, especially on a sewing machine
