How do I make a quilt out of old clothes?

custom handmade memory quilt from old clothes

When I first sit down to make a quilt out of old clothes, I have a process I normally go through.

  1. Launder clothes if necessary.

  2. Sort garments into meaningful piles so I can see what Iā€™m working with. I may sort by color, weight, or type of fabric depending on the project.

  3. Pick the core garments that will make up the color palette of the quilt.

  4. Deconstruct them by cutting out the seams and any interfacing

  5. Iron the pieces

  6. Fold into neat little stacks

  7. Cut up one panel of each of the main garments into workable sizes (normally hand-sized for me)

  8. Arrange on design wall and play around with composition until something catches my eye

  9. Replicate that something as many times as necessary to finish the quilt
