Which clothes make the best quilts?
Which clothes make the best quilts is a question worth thinking about. Some old clothing is just easier to work with and yields better results in the final quilt. In my experience, here are my favorites:
men’s dress shirts: these are a staple in making a memory quilt. The material is often a similar weight to cotton fabric quilters typically work with. In addition, it deconstructs easily into large panels. (Similar shirts designed for women, for example, may have a lot of darts and small panels.)
khakis, chinos: these work easily into a quilt for the same reasons as men’s dress shirts
jeans: I love a good denim quilt, but denim can be heavier than fabric quilters typically work with. If working with denim, you may want to consider keeping all the fabrics you use a similar weight. (ie, I wouldn’t combine denim and a light-weight men’s dress shirt.)
