How to choose your fabrics for a burial quilt

Custom handmade memory quilt

Burial quilts can be made out of any number of fabrics. I recommended that the fabrics you choose be:

  1. all-natural fibers like cotton, silk, wool, or linen

  2. laundered at least once, to wash off potential industrial chemical residue

Aside from those few specifics, the rest is up to you. I’ve sewn many kinds of fabrics into quilts:

  • dress shirts

  • pants, including jeans

  • a ball cap

  • work uniforms

  • Boy Scout handkerchiefs

  • school uniforms

  • cloth napkins

  • tablecloth

  • bed linens

  • pieces of cross-stitch

  • embroidered work

Really, anything is a possibility. Making decisions about end-of-life care is a deeply personal subject. If you’d like to talk more about burial quilts, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to email me.
